when looking for music to be released on magazine, our guideline has always been energy. the key question remains the same: does the artist have something important to say? does it have a sense of urgency? alex played us these tracks while visiting the magazine studio in cologne earlier this year and we were consumed by unadulterated rage. this is anything but a conceptual release, alex has not released this kind of music before. a side of alex manifests itself through these techno tracks, that most might not have known before. brutal yet beautiful, furious yet fragile. a berlin native who shaped his sense for techno by striving through his hometown and its infamous raves, alex is now one of the prominent protagonists of that scene – not only when regularly playing at berghain. the ep harnesses this experience perfectly, fully preserving the energy of the creation process by recording directly to tape. most productions may have suffered from this primitive method of locking sound into position, but not these tracks from a techno master.

texas native demarkus lewis is up next on the great d3 elements label. this time, demarkus brings his signature diverse house style on this release, which features tracks from his mental notes album that only came out digitally in 2011. luckily for lovers of vinyl, d3 is putting out three of the gems from that release. first is the upfront house of without pause that is full of demarkus bumping drums, masterful combination of spacey, detroit style electronics and swirling chords that will get anyone onto the dancefloor. lady in pink also features some wonderful spacey chords, but is a more downtempo, broken beat type of affair, resplendent with computer bleeps. over onto the b side, demarkus takes us into a more spiritual and deep territory, with behind closed doors (afro main mix). the afro rhythms coupled with eman s spoken words turn this into a track that do wonders with a heaving, sweaty dance floor in the early hours. another winner for the d3 elements label.

following up lou karsh’s excellent “ataraxia” ep we’re hitting up australia once again, such is the level of burgeoning talent down under. this time it’s the turn of sydney native e davd.

seriously dope 4 track disco edits ep. first up is jaz. the south carolina native is at the top of the disco edits game, with records out on universal cave, rotating souls, and passport to paradise. “the endť” is a 90bpm monster. easily suited for lovers of balearic, one of those rare slow tracks that can really rock a dance floor. the patchouli brothers are up and comers from toronto, with a 12” on basic fingers, “cheat, lie, kill, dieť” is a mid tempo stomper. a versatile track easily blended with disco or house, and a hook so catchy, crowds are singing along before the end of the track. will martin opens up the b-side with pure fire. “rock me again” is the transformation of a 2 minute james brown production into 7 and a half minutes of dance floor ecstasy. martin is known for lo-fi house, with releases on 2mr, dolly, argot, and supply records. studebaker hawk closes us out with the b-boy jam, “say africa”. breaks for days, and even a heavy guitar solo. this track is for lovers of deep disco, classic hip hop, and afrobeat. limited run so don t sleep on this one!

the american pop duo ‘made in france’ has been making waves on the parisian stage with their retro style evocative of the great girl groups of the 60 s (the shirelles, the ronnettes, the shangri-las). this album follows the release of music video clips for the singles -beau brown- and -burn-. musicians and songwriters bathed in the pop music of the 50 s - 70 s from their native usa, johannah cantwell and laura woody take us through the ups and downs of their lives in paris with joyful melodies and self-deprecating humor. the album has undercurrents of surf rock and motown, with riffs from organ, harpsichord, sitar and timpani supporting their texts, which are decidedly of their time. produced and arranged by franck hedin and nathalie loriot (the shuffles, lafayette, howlin’jaws…), recorded by fred carrayol at mercredi 9 studio in paris, the album was both mixed by fred and etienne colin.

the next modern hypnosis sees the first official vinyl release from another channel. the young german producer jonas schachners (another channel) has been at the fore front of the new wave of ‘dub techno’ that has been lurking in the underground over the last few years. his dubbed out analog sound has left some accrediting his productions as ‘picking up where rhythm & sound left off’. his debut 12” gives us two very unique tracks. the a side ‘lord 35’ is an energetic synth driven tune which sitting at 135bpm, in a two-step style is made for the dance. the b side ‘corruption’ sees an international connection with the original composition created in germany by another channel, then the overdubbing of vocals supplied by ethiopian vocalist enushu taye (the black jesus experience) in her native amharic, recorded and mixed by mystik in his melbourne studio. the warm analog stabs and punchy bassline accompanied with enushu taye’s haunting vocals makes for a beautiful piece of music.

when it comes to soulful house, detroit native alton miller is about as ingrained as it gets. peacefrog, planet e, moods & grooves, mahogani and sound signature have all endorsed his talents and with an album looming later in the year, waella s choice sow the seeds with all things good. club music for the sensitive souls, with some arresting spoken word poetry and even a broken beat deviation. all things good is the fourth release from london label waella s choice, following hanna, ranger and the london on key compilation.

the 3rd release on alma negra records is dedicated to the music of eritrea, a small (in african terms, that is) country nestled in between sudan and ethopia on the south end of the red sea. drawing from its native spiritual roots as well as the christian and islamic influences of conquering factions, this multiethnical country is home to an amazingly diverse plethora of cultures and musical styles. on this ep, we are happy to showcase the music of the saho people from the region of zula, which is located in between the coastal lowlands close to the dahlak archipelago. the word saho roughly translates (translated?) as nomad, pointing towards a lifestyle where tradition and culture is being passed on orally over generations. the exact source for these edits of the saho sound are thus lost to the murky depths of history, as they are based on traditional folksongs

weapons of mass destruction was one of the last eps by nur jaber , which is best known in berlin for its residence at the techno-matinee staub . this could be heard slammender, dry techno with sometimes disturbing vocals – hope sounds different. more precisely: hope sounds like the first longplayer of the native lebanese. if only – a state of peace still carries a conditional in the title, but the music on the nine tracks speak very directly of a better world. inspired by the herbaceous-cosmic sound of the berlin school, ambient and ambient techno in all its facets and the friendlier side of the artificial intelligence tradition, the osf unites-mit operator on their debut album a variety of styles, which are translated into an equally sensible as multi-layered narrative. peace, that would be something for a change.

a native of the caribbean coast of colombia, abelardo carbono achieved legendary status in his country’s storied ranks of musical icons by combining the homegrown sounds of cumbia with the chiming guitars of west african soukous, enormously popular with the local tropical sound systems, and drenching the whole thing in his off-kilter, surreal and slightly psychedelic sensibility.
with the exception of a well-received compilation of songs from his 1980s heyday, carbono has been rarely heard from outside the sweaty dancehalls he still commands in his hometown of barranquilla. now, names you can trust has welcomed the reclusive guitarist and singer back to the vinyl format with a simmering afro-carib beast of a cut, recorded with the assistance of will -quantic- holland on rhythm guitar and mario galeano frente cumbiero, ondatropica on keys and in conjunction with lucas silva of palenque records & polen records. it’s a true cross-generational and international collaboration that is uniquely possible via colombia. the first release of this expansive & power packed studio session is a cover of vallenato pioneer guillermo buitrago’s la piña madura. this updated take veers heavily towards africa on a rock solid foundation of bass and drums, with abelardo’s trademark guitar and quirky vocals leading the way.

following her 1959 appearance in the anti-apartheid film come back, africa south african native miriam makeba vaulted into the international spotlight, fell under the tutelage of harry belafonte, and moved to new york city in 1960 where she immediately became a massive recording sensation. this lp collects some of that brilliant early material that launched her career and made her one of the most beloved voices of the 20th century. all tracks recorded 1957 - 1962.

alex attias got his start in back in ’88 playing funk, house, jazz, and disco, as well as producing under various monikers such as mustang, freedom soundz or beatless. moving to london in ’97 he started his ‘visions’ label and found himself at the epicentre of the emerging west london ‘broken beat’ scene which grew around his studio at goya. releases on people, planet e, ubiquity, neroli, archive and compost followed, as well as remixes for incognito, 4hero, ennio morricone, sun ra, art blakey, roni size and laurent garnier among others.

osaka based producer 7fo. having previously released a cassette on rvng international, and a 7inch single on bokeh versions in 2017, this is the japanese producers debut full length vinyl release. the tracks, recorded between 2012 and 2017, have been tweaked, remastered and recorded to vinyl for the first time. the mysterious figure recorded the tracks at home, processing guitar sounds, using a sampler, synthesizer and junk equipment. following in the footsteps of the ambient giants of his native lands, 7fo’s music continues this illustrious heritage whilst offering something fresh, modern and beautifully rendered. he describes his own sound as gorgeous sustained tones and dreamlike oscillations that drift through the inorganic/electronic world reverberating through our subconscious creating sonic fables in our minds. the 12inch comes with artwork designed by label head & visual artist jack hardwicke. to accompany the release greek filmmaker george kountouras, who also collaborated on the artwork, has directed a gorgeous video for the title track moment

following his work with swedish label comorbid records, stockholm native bård ericson aka boerd has signed with anjunadeep to release his latest mini-album, ‘static’. an accomplished musician, bård’s boerd project aims to reflect his own personal emotions and atmosphere. with a deft and delicate approach to composition, his music draws you in whilst shutting out the outside world. cutting his teeth from age 15 in the world of chiptune (composing via the means of 16-bit videogame consoles), bård quickly developed a taste for creating abstract music. and after a handful of eps and live shows across europe, he transitioned focus towards music that he felt better expressed his own place in the world. enter ‘boerd’. with influences ranging from burial, bibio and even aphex twin, the 26-year-old has developed a style that pushes the boundaries of atmospheric electronica with stunning attention to detail. building his sound from samples he records himself, ericson conjures a euphoric mix of subtle soundscapes that simultaneously breathe and play in awe.

san francisco in the late 1960. the hotbed of psychedelic and rock culture. the dead, joplin, jefferson airplane and a host of others all gaining mainstream acceptance for their acid tinged work. but the city and the surrounding bay area had so much more going for them. a liberal political outlook and a large african american and latino population, meant that musical and cultural reference points were wider and more easily assimilated there than (almost) anywhere else in the united states. two of the biggest groups to emerge from this scene were santana and sly and the family stone, with their melting pots of sound that took in jazz, soul, rock and latin influence. for a while they were two of the biggest acts in the united states and scores of local bands tried to follow in their footsteps. they were hard acts to follow and very few got to the stage of making a 45, never mind a whole lp. one of the best to do just that were leon’s creation, whose debut lp “this is the beginning” acid jazz are reissuing here. a native of san francisco leon patillo led the group, whose multi racial line-up echoed that of his heroes on the local scene. self contained and gigging locally they made their debut album at the tiny studio 10 who also custom pressed the album in extremely limited numbers the music is a perfect blend of acid soul, mixed with hippie sentiments that will get you dancing on the uptempo numbers such as the title track, ‘back roads’ – with its glorious harmonies and the soaring ‘power’. more thoughtful numbers such as ‘until you were gone’ or ‘love’ will touch your soul. so impressed was carlos santana that he eventually asked leon to join his band.

r&s newcomer karim sahraoui delivers an ep of deep, emotive techno that draws on the rich legacy of detroit while staying relevant for the modern era. sahraoui is a globetrotting seeker of musical truth spending time in malaysia, italy and spain as well as his native france, he recorded in the early 2000s to some acclaim as djinxx, releasing prolifically for delsin, cocoon, f-com bedrock, and ovum amongst others. in 2009 he took a couple of years out from the industry, travelling to malaysia to find himself. in 2011 a chance meeting reconnected sahraoui with derrick may, who he originally met in the late 90s. may was reactivating transmat and persuaded karim to let him release his music, but on the condition it be under his own name. the resulting pair of eternal life eps in 2014 and 2016 marked his rich return to form glorious melodic, contemplative techno in the classic motor city mode. his plenitude ep for r&s builds on similar positive themes - from the percolating arpeggios and mystic melodies of spy of the desert, to the anthemic jazzy techo paen of born again or the aching symphonic build of before the 2nd coming its clear that after decades in the business sahraouis talent is only growing rather than diminishing. i wanted to give it more spirituality, musicality and roots with the choice of the sounds. going back in the past and transcribe everything with visionary fusions, sahraoui explains.
